While Swimmers Fled Attack, Popular Photo Shows Rescuer Sprinting ‘All Out’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, views the renowned coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, along with numerous others in the area, heard pops echoing across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her apartment, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the avenue, talking to a duo who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up behind her. It was a rescuer, dashing to Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was alone heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, and hauling that large equipment and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism During Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of heroism in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, officers and medical teams caring for many victims.

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional beach safety officers, stated that the crew rose to the occasion from the second the incident began until late that night.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” stated a mayor.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that evening should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much light we have observed in the face of such evil.”
