Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
