UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
