The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
