The Japanese Economy Contracts while Exports Face Impact by American Tariffs
Japan's economy has recorded a decline for the initial time in a year and a half, mainly driven by falling overseas shipments because of newly imposed American tariffs.
G7 Economic Standings
Japan has become the first Group of Seven economy to announce an economic contraction in the latest three-month period.
With the United States yet to release its GDP data for Q3 2025, the present G7 growth leaderboard show:
- France: 0.5 percent expansion
- UK: 0.1 percent
- Canadian economy: 0.1 percent (provisional estimate)
- German economy: 0%
- Italy: 0%
- Japan: negative 0.4 percent
Travel Shares Decline during Political Dispute with Beijing
In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is facing an growing political dispute with China concerning Taiwan.
Shares in Japanese travel and consumer companies have declined noticeably after China urged its residents to avoid visiting to Japan.
This action by Beijing heightened a diplomatic feud that was initiated by comments from Tokyo's recently appointed prime minister about the potential of deploying forces in the event of a hypothetical Chinese invasion on Taiwan.
The situation led to a surge of sell-offs across Japanese tourism-related stocks.
- Oriental Land shares fell by 5.7 percent
- Isetan Mitsukoshi tumbled by 11.3%
- Japan Airlines declined by 3.75 percent
"The China-Japan dispute over Taiwan and Beijing's advisory advising against travel to Japan creates short-term headwinds for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's international visitors, making department stores, high-end shopping, and tourism services particularly at risk."
Economic Decline Breakdown
Japanese GDP fell by 0.4 percent in the July-September quarter, as industrial exports were affected by tariffs imposed by the United States recently.
Exports were a primary driver of the decline, dropping by 1.2 percent compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a year ago.
Previously, the US administration had threatened Japan with a new 25% tariff on its goods, which was later lowered to 15 percent when the two countries reached a trade agreement.
Private demand also declined, by 0.3% compared to the previous quarter.
On an annualized basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.
"Japan's economy was strong in the first half of this year and today's GDP data showed that growth is halted temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be returning on a gradual growth trend going forward."
The US administration has lately acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing duties on imported food products including meat, produce, coffee and bananas amid increasing concerns about rising costs.
