The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
