Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He battled the legal system and the legal system triumphed.

Two months after getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally looks destined for incarceration.

Imminent Jailing

The convicted plotter – who has been living under residential detention in his residence while a series of judicial steps and appeals unfold – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the coming days, during mounting speculation that he will be sent to a well-known maximum security facility.

Previous Statements on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the conservative former paratrooper exhibited scant compassion for the country's inmates.

“What’s the need to offer those lowlifes a good life?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to end up behind bars, the only thing required is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Jail Destination Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an obvious effort to discourage the supreme court from banishing him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, stated he predicted the elderly politician to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute digestive problems – the outcome of a almost deadly stabbing during the 2018 presidential election race – implied it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is extremely serious. He cannot to cope if they move him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells containing 40 inmates: “That is virtually one meter squared per prisoner.

“We conversed to the convicts and they complain, of course, of the terrible meals,” continued the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

He is not the lone figure voicing opinions ahead of the former president’s predicted imprisonment.

Writing in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the greatest wrong in its record”.

“It is an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of many of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided Public Opinion

That may be accurate considering the significant backing Bolsonaro holds on the conservative side. Yet his predicted jailing has also pleased the hearts of many other people who believe he should be jailed for conspiring to block his successor from taking power – and even scheming to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a representative for the current administration's political party, commented: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to receive respectful care – but respectful treatment while incarcerated. He cannot persist being his own prison warden for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years praising the tough conditions of inmates, had unexpectedly become aware to their rights. “Only now has the extreme right – which has always claimed that basic rights should not be for criminals – decided to tour a jail to discover what circumstances are actually like,” he stated.

“The former president is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, degrading conduct”.

Likely Jail Facilities

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now contains about fourteen thousand inmates, his probable assigned facility seems to be a nearby penitentiary for officers and other “unique” detainees called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are far more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro had while occupying the stunning leader's home, approximately 20 kilometers away.

Based on reports, the room Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – about the size of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 sq metre WC with a bathing area and a 130 square foot terrace. “He could be permitted to have a set and even a minibar in his quarters as long as they were provided by his family,” sources indicated.

Ideological Responses

The lawmaker denounced the speculated idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his fate in the {
