The British tennis star secured the most notable success of his professional journey by coming back from a set down to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this win represents Norrie's maiden success over a reigning world No 1.

"Massive. So big for me," stated Norrie, who joins as the fifth UK male player in history to overcome a world No 1. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifiers here. I just sought to enjoy my tennis in the second half of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the most significant win of my career, my initial victory over the top player and probably the most confident athlete in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme run of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive Masters 1000 successes, which represented the best series of performances in the Spanish star's young professional path.

Match Breakdown

The top seed looked to be progressing easily towards victory early on as he cruised in the initial stanza. However, the British contender slowly worked himself back into the game by delivering with sharper placement and pulling the Spaniard into extended, physical rallies. His relentless steadiness and consistency gradually left its mark.

During large parts of the match, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes. The rising talent seemed notably uncomfortable executing his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the game for most of this season, producing 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 mistakes. Across the net, Norrie presented his opponent minimal unforced errors, sustaining his steadiness, athleticism and depth throughout while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to advance inside the baseline and strike effectively.
