NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, hesitated to declare he would live there right away after his victory in November.

"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its vibrant immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live there, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment although he is from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his humble Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
