New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD issued surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
