Weather experts are saying an icy start to the new year, with snowfall likely across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Continue Despite Warnings

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be low, making warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Warnings Activated

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This involves a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
