A budget proposal that would conclude the longest government shutdown in American history is heading to the House of Representatives for a critical decision on the coming day.

On the 43rd day of the legislative standoff, congressional members are reassembling in Washington to vote on whether to approve a legislative agreement that would support government departments for the next eight weeks.

Majority party officials expressed confidence the budget proposal would clear the lower chamber, regardless of their narrow majority. But leading opposition members pledged to fight it.

Minority Position

The House leader has avoided convening the chamber for several weeks to increase leverage against Senate Democrats to agree a shutdown compromise.

And when the closure concludes, funding legislators have only 60 days to prevent the next one.

Federal appropriations would then be scheduled to end on the end of next month.
