Armed conflict at school
Learning centers in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The gang of attackers stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.

In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in the past few months, with educational institutions suffering the most of the violence.
