A Story of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
During the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to book a place to stay upon arrival, however when I arrived, a large conference was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned that airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate all night. Unsure of quite what to do and growing worried, I hopped on public transport and began walking towards a gaming venue, thinking I might spend the night in an establishment operating 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape for nailing the admissions interview the following day, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more people with such compassion.
It seems I seemed out of place because a woman spotted me loitering in the city center and wondered if everything was alright. I explained my situation and without hesitation she suggested I was welcome to sleep on a spare mattress at her university residence at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my my interview was the following day. She even offered some food: a leftover stuffed baguettes she brought back her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.
Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she took being a woman letting a male stranger she’d just met stay in her room. In those days I was in my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – but still very grateful.
I didn’t end up study at that university, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her act of kindness tenfold. The world needs more people with such compassion.
